7 Essential Items To Include In Your Horse Riding Gear in 2024

7 Essential Items To Include In Your Horse Riding Gear in 2024

Being well-equipped going into the season is fundamental to safer riding and will help to give you and your horse the best chance to achieve your goals.

In this guide, you’ll discover the top 7 riding essentials that can increase safety, comfort, and help improve performance.

1 – Riding Helmet

In any sport involving speed, unpredictability and the potential for injury, a quality helmet is your best protection. Horse Riding Hats or Helmets are designed to absorb impact and decrease the risk of severe injury when you’ve had a fall. Even the most experienced rider has the potential to fall or be thrown from their horse. This makes the helmet an essential part of every horse riding kit.

Ensure you choose a riding hat  that fits well, is comfortable, and most importantly, certified for equestrian use. The type of hat you choose and the standard it complies with largely depends on the type of riding activity you take part in. If you compete under rules, it is always best to check each disciplines rule book before investing in a new one.

You can download the 2024 Riding Hat Rules from British Equestrian Trade Association website here

2 – Riding Boots

A pair of quality riding boots is more than just a fashion statement in the equestrian world. They are designed to protect your feet while riding and handling horses, significantly enhancing your riding experience. High-quality boots offer grip, stability, prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup, and protect your legs from chafing against the saddle.

Riding boots are available in various styles and materials. While many professional riders prefer leather, synthetic options can offer added water resistance. Safety features such as non-slip soles and steel-toe caps, often included in quality boots, keep you steady and protect your toes from excitable horses. Choose a pair that fits your comfort, riding style, and weather conditions.

3 – Saddle Pad

A quality saddle pad is not only crucial for enhancing the rider’s comfort, but also for evenly distributing weight under the saddle  to ensure the horse’s wellbeing. A saddle pad provides cushioning between the horse and saddle and helps to protect the horse’s back from the saddle rubbing.

Saddle pads come in a variety of styles such as close contact, GP, dressage, and half pads and a variety of materials such as wool, sheepskin, and synthetics. Some of the latest innovations in saddle pad designs included the use of memory foam, polyester and gel for their shock absorbing properties, which may increase the thickness of the saddle pad.

Remember, a saddle pad can affect the fit of your saddle so it’s wise to seek the advice of a qualified saddler if you have concerns.

4 – Breeches/Jodhpurs

Riding breeches are designed for comfort and flexibility during riding. These tight-fitting garments are made from stretchy material, with patches on the inside of the knee and on the seat area to enhance grip and maximise stability in the saddle.  Wearing good quality breeches can lower the risk of blisters, rubbing and other discomforts from prolonged riding.

5 – Riding Gloves

A quality pair of riding gloves is another essential piece of equipment not to be overlooked. After hours of riding, you’ll appreciate these gloves as they enhance your grip on the reins to provide better control, and prevent blisters.Modern riding gloves are made from a variety of materials, some of which have moisture-wicking properties to keep your hands dry during intense activities or in adverse weather conditions. Depending on your chosen discipline, you’ll often find a pair of gloves specifically designed for your activity. For British Eventing dressage phase and for British Dressage gloves are mandatory in competition, but can be any colour.

6 – First-Aid Kit

Even the most experienced and careful riders can have accidents. Thus, having a first-aid kit on hand for you and your horse is essential. Keep well stock first aid kit at the yard and one in your horsebox or car when you are travelling with your horse. Your kit should include pain relievers, antiseptic, bandages, and gauze pads for humans. For your horse, consider adding vet wrap, hoof poultices, saline solution, wound spray, sterile guaze, and electrolyte sachets.  For more advice on horse-specific items, consult your veterinarian.
